Periodic Limb Movements In Sleep

Periodic motion of the limbs is characterized by recurrent frequent motion of the limbs during sleep. It occurs mostly in the lower parts of the body, such as the toes, ankles, knees and hips. It may also occur in the upper extremities of the body, in certain cases. Periodic Limb Movements tends to be a normal characteristic in many individuals, and the detection of whether or not such behaviors are clinically related to a specific diagnosis of Periodic Limb Movements remains a problem for clinical and scientific fields. In addition, PLMD treatment cannot be used where there is already a diagnosis of narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, REM sleep behavior disorder or untreated obstructive sleep apnea, as irregular sleep movements are typical in such disorders.
