Partial Nephrectomy Journals

Partial nephrectomy is also mentioned as nephron-sparing surgery or kidney sparing surgery. During partial nephrectomy the surgeon saves the kidney and removes the tumor. This is a fragile procedure that requires an experienced surgeon and surgical team. All the partial in nephrectomy procedures are not same. For example, If surgeon cut half the kidney for a very small 1 cm tumor while another may be able to save 90 percent of the kidney a significant difference for your kidney health. Additionally, partial nephrectomy can be performed through open or robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery and a surgeon trained and experienced in both techniques is ideal. There are many other critical variables involved that are best handled by an experienced team. Most often a nephrectomy is performed to treat kidney cancer or to get rid of a noncancerous (benign) tumor. In some cases, a nephrectomy is performed to affect a diseased or seriously damaged kidney. In the case of a donor nephrectomy, the urologic surgeon removes a healthy kidney from a donor for transplant into an individual who needs a functioning kidney. The urologic surgeon may perform a nephrectomy through one incision within the abdomen or side (open nephrectomy) or through a series of small incisions within the abdomen using a camera and small instruments (laparoscopic nephrectomy).
