Pain Assement Tools Open Access Articles

Pain assessment is very important if pain management wants to be effective. Nurses are in a unique position to assess pain because they have the most contact with children and their families in the hospital. Pain is the most common symptom experienced by children in hospitals. Acute pain (noiciception) is associated with tissue damage and inflammatory response, heals with a short duration and does not involve nerve tissue. Pain is multidimensional in nature and therefore assessment must include intensity, location, duration and description, impact on activities and factors that can influence the perception of child pain (bio psychosocial phenomena). Effects that can change pain perception and coping strategies include social history / problems, cultural and religious beliefs, past pain experiences and first pain experiences. In addition, family responses to their children who are in pain can have a negative or positive influence.
