Ovarian Dysfunction Open Access Journals

A condition where the ovaries stop working and menstrual periods stop before age 40. This can cause fertility problems and menopausal symptoms. There are 2  types of ovarian failure, they are primary and secondary. Primary ovarian failure means that the ovaries are not functioning normally. Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), also known as premature ovarian failure, occurs when a woman's ovaries stop working normally before she is 40 years old. Many women naturally experience a decrease in fertility when they are around 40 years old. They may start having irregular menstrual periods when they switch to menopause. In early menopause, the ovary does not produce estrogen in normal amounts or releases eggs regularly. Infertility often occurs. However, it is possible for women with this condition to become pregnant with treatment. Treatment for primary ovarian insufficiency usually focuses on problems arising from estrogen deficiency.
