A neurologist may be a medical doctor who focuses on treating diseases of the systema nervosum. The systema nervosum is formed of two parts: the central and peripheral systema nervosum. It includes the brain and spinal cord. Illnesses, disorders, and injuries that involve the systema nervosum often require a neurologist’s management and treatment. People who are having problems with their senses, like touch, vision, or smell, can also get to see a neurologist. Problems with senses are sometimes caused by systema nervosum disorders. Because the systema nervosum is complex, a neurologist may concentrate on a selected area. They’ll do a fellowship in that area after residency training. Subspecialties have evolved to narrow a doctor’s focus. During your first appointment with a neurologist, they’ll likely perform a physical exam and a neurological exam. A neurological exam will test muscle strength, reflexes, and coordination. Since different disorders can have similar symptoms, your neurologist may have more testing to form a diagnosis. Neurologists may recommend a spread of procedures to assist diagnose or treat a condition. This procedure can help your neurologist diagnose myasthenia. In this test, your doctor injects you with drugs called Tensilon. Then they observe how it affects your muscle movements.
