Neglected Tropical Diseases

A diverse community of tropical pathogens is neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Many neglected tropical diseases and other widespread diseases have common vectors, creating another opportunity to integrate treatment and control. One such example is malaria and lymphatic filariasis. Both diseases are spread by mosquito vectors of the same or similar type. Vector control through insecticide net distribution reduces the human contact with a wide variety of vectors. Built-in vector control can also reduce the pressure on mass drug administration, especially with regard to rapidly evolving drug resistance. The combination of vector control and mass administration of drugs reveals both, making each less susceptible to developing resistance. The World Health Organization (WHO) has established a list of 17 officially neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). We call this neglected because they don’t get much attention. They most commonly occur in developing countries around the world, which suffer from poor sanitation, lack of drinking water, and lack of access to health care. The significance of these diseases is medical and socio-economic.
