Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which for good vision is vital to its health. Often this damage comes from an abnormally high pressure in your eye. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for individuals over 60 years old. It may occur at any age but is more prevalent in older adults. Many forms of glaucoma do not have indications of warning. The effect is so gradual you may not notice a vision change until the condition is at an advanced stage. Because it is not possible to recover vision loss due to glaucoma, regular eye exams that include measurements of your eye pressure are important so that a diagnosis can be made at its early stages and treated appropriately.
