Germ Cell Journals
A germ cell is any biological cell that gives rise to the gametes of a sexually reproducing organism. The germ
cells originate in the primitive streak in many animals, and migrate to the developing gonads via the gut of an embryo. They undergo meiosis there, followed by
cell division into mature gametes, eggs or sperm. Like species, in early growth plants have no allocated germ cells. Instead, germ
cells may originate from adult somatic
cells (such as the flowering
plant floral meristem). In vitro germ
cells may develop similar properties to those of embryonic stem
cells (ES), under certain conditions. The mechanism underlying that change is still unknown. These modified
cells are then known as embryonic germ
cells (EG). Both EG and ES are in vitro pluripotent, but only in vivo pluripotency has been confirmed by ES. Latest experiments have shown that primordial germ
cells can be produced from ES.
