Genome is instructions for you to make and maintain yourself. It is written in a chemical DNA code. This has a gene for all living things; plants, fungi , viruses and animals. The 3.2 billion letters of your DNA are your genome. It has around 20,000 genes. Genes are the instructions to make the proteins from which our bodies are built – from hair and fingernails keratin to antibody proteins that fight infection. Genes make up about 1-5% of your genome. Genes make up about one to five per cent of your genome. The rest of the DNA used to be called 'junk' DNA, between the genes. It was not deemed important. But we now know DNA between genes is important for gene and genome regulation. It can switch genes on and off in the right time, for example. There's a lot more to learn about what all of this does.
