General Practice Studies
The low appeal of
General Practice and first care as a career option may be a recurrent problem for
healthcare systems throughout Europe, USA and other countries within the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). A high-performing primary healthcare workforce is important for an efficient
health system. However the shortage of
health personnel, the inefficient deployment of these available, and an inadequate working
environment contribute to shortages of consistent and efficient
human resources for
health in European countries. The European Commission projects the shortage of
health personnel within the European Union to be 2 million, including 230,000 physicians and 600,000 nurses, by the year 2020, if nothing is completed to regulate measures for recruitment and retention of the workforce. Research has shown a robust workforce generally Practice is required to realize an efficiency balance between the utilization of economic resources and efficient look after patients.
Most of the research focused on the GP workforce targeting negative factors. the explanations students didn't choose this as a career or GPs were leaving the profession were widely explored. Burnout was one among the foremost frequently highlighted factors. In many OECD countries, aside from the uk , the income gap between GPs and specialists had expanded during the last decade, promoting the appeal of other specialties for future physicians.
Health policy makers, conscious of the matter of a decreasing
General Practice workforce, tried to vary national policies in most European countries to strengthen General Practice.
