General Practice Opportunities

 A General practice is private practice, although one that attracts substantial amounts of government subsidies, in the sense that Medicare usually pays a substantial amount of GP income. GP systems had already begun adoption, driven by a particular need. Computers began to arrive because Australian GPs identified a key area that would allow computers to improve their workflow. Australian laws are rather complicated, owing to the nature of policy subsidies. Whether or not a drug is on prescription is a state regulation, but the federal government is also subsidizing a raft of medications. And a basic drug such as diclofenac comes with two separate weights and three different pack types, as well as suppositories its vaccinations, it is sold under specific brand labels by numerous firms. Sometimes a drug can be easily prescribed for one condition, but for a different indication requires a phone call to the responsible government agency. That list would be updated four times a year, with multiple changes. It was time consuming to remember what pack sizes and how many repeats were confusing, and to look up the "almost yellow" book forever. Thus, most future developments in general practice are based on computerization of treatment strategies.
