Diabetes And Pulmonary Tuberculosis

The double burden of tuberculosis (TB) and DM (DM) is hitting certain Asian countries harder than other areas. In a global estimate, 15% of all TB cases might be due to DM, with 40% of these cases coming from India and China. The relationship between DM (DM) and consumption has attracted the interest of the many clinicians and investigators for an extended time. Many studies have shown that the prevalence of tuberculosis among diabetics is 2–5 times higher than in the nondiabetic population. Many other countries of South, East, and South-East Asia are of particular concern given their TB burdens, large projected increases in DM prevalence, and population size. The material forming the basis of our study is drawn from a group of patients admitted to Muirdale Sanatorium since January 1, 1923, a group suffering with diabetes mellitus complicated by pulmonary tuber culosis. Of the total admissions during this period, 5,224 cases, 31, or 0.59 per cent, were found to be diabetics.
