The liver is essential for survival, assisting almost every organ in the vertebrates, including certain other species. The liver is therefore vulnerable to many infections, owing to its strategic location and multidimensional functions. The Journal of Liver addresses both the vital role of the liver in the body and infections such as hepatitis, alcohol damage, fatty liver, cirrhosis, liver cancer, drug damage. Cirrhosis, also known as cirrhosis of the liver or cirrhosis of the hepatic  is a disease in which the liver does not function properly because of long-term damage. This damage is characterized by the scar tissue replacing the normal liver tissue. The disease usually progresses gradually over months or years. Symptoms often don't occur early on.
