A bone marrow transplant is a process for replacing damaged or destructed bone marrow with healthy stem cells of the bone marrow. Bone marrow is the tissue within the bones which is soft and fat. The blood cells are formed by bone marrow. Stem cells in the bone marrow are immature cells which give rise to all of your different blood cells. A bone marrow transplant is a medical procedure performed to replace the damaged or destroyed bone marrow by disease , infection, or chemotherapy. This process involves transplanting stem cells from the blood, which migrate to the bone marrow where new blood cells are formed and new marrow development encouraged. Stem cell transplantation is multipotent stem cell transplantation, usually derived from bone marrow , peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood. Autologous and allogeneic are the two principal types of stem cell transplants. Peripheral blood stem cell transplantation is when patient receives healthy stem cells to replace their own stem cells which have been killed by disease or radiation or high doses of anticancer drugs administered in the course of the process. The healthy stem cells can come from the patient's blood, or from a donor.
