Biodefense refers to steps to restore biosecurity of a group of organisms that are affected or may be exposed to biological threats or infectious diseases. Bioprotection is often discussed in the context of biowar or bioterrorism and is usually considered a term for military or emergency action. Biodefense applies to two separate target groups: non-combatant civilians and military fighters (troops in the region). Protecting water and food supplies is often an important part of biosecurity. The aim of biological defense is to integrate ongoing national and internal security efforts, medicine, public health, intelligence, the diplomatic community and law enforcement agencies. Health care providers and public health officials are among the first line of defense. In some countries, private, local and regional (state) capabilities are expanded and coordinated with federal assets to provide multiple layers of protection against biological weapons attacks. Biodefense uses medical measures to protect people from bio-terrorism. This includes drugs and vaccinations. This also includes medical research and preparation to protect against bio-terrorist attacks.
