Ankle Replacement Surgery

Ankle replacement surgery is the artificial implant replacement of a damaged ankle joint. The ankle joint (tibiotalar joint) is where your shinbone (tibia) inserts on peak of a bone of your foot, the talus. Arthritis can influence this joint as well as other attaches in the foot. Over period, the smooth cartilage on the external of the bones wears away. This can show in pain, swelling and inflammation of your joint. Ankle replacement surgery is a system to replace this damaged joint to destroy this swelling and pain. Generally, the strategy takes place under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will make a slit in your ankle to approach the affected joint. Your surgeon will remove the damaged parts of your talus bones and tibia. Your surgeon will join artificial metal joints to the balance bone surfaces, with a piece of plastic placed between them.
