Clinical Research on COVID-19 outbreaks

Clinical Practice is pleased to announce Special issue on “Clinical Research on COVID-19 outbreaks”. Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an ongoing pandemic disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV 2). The outbreak was identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. More than 3.11 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported in 185 countries and territories, resulting in more than 217,000 deaths. More than 928,000 people have recovered.

The virus is primarily spread between people during close contact, often via small droplets produced by coughing, sneezing or talking. Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, and loss of smell. Complications may include pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. The time from exposure to onset of symptoms is typically around five days, but may range from two to fourteen days. COVID 19 drug development is the research process to develop a preventative vaccine or therapeutic prescription drug that would alleviate the severity of 2019-20 coronavirus disease (COVID 19). Internationally during April 2020, several hundred drug companies, biotechnology firms, university research groups, and health organizations were developing 115 vaccine candidates and 249 potential therapies for COVID 19 disease in various stages of preclinical or clinical research. By late April, some 330 clinical trials were in progress worldwide to evaluate potential therapies against COVID-19.
