Ankle Sprains Scientific Journals

Acute ankle sprain injury, the most common acute sport trauma, accounts for about 14 per cent of all sport-related injuries. Of these, 80 per cent are ligamentous sprains caused by explosive inversion or supination. Injury also arises at the subtalar joint and breaks the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) which has the lowest final load between the lateral ligaments at the ankle. For extrinsic risk factors for ankle sprain injury, orthotics may decrease the risk while increased exercise intensity in soccer may increase the risk. Intrinsic influences, decreased foot size, decreased ankle eversion to inversion strength, plantarflexion strength and ratio of dorsiflexion to plantarflexion intensity, and limb dominance may raise the likelihood of ankle sprain injury.
